About ICO and favicons
ICO is the icon format from Windows, and it is also the classic format for a website favicon: the small picture in a browser tab, a bookmark list and search results. Unlike a PNG, one ICO file holds the same icon in several sizes, so each place that shows it picks the size that looks sharpest instead of shrinking a large image.
This converter builds an ICO with four sizes from your PNG: 16 and 32 pixels for browser tabs and bookmarks, 48 pixels for Windows shortcuts and 256 pixels for large desktop icons. Each size is stored as a PNG inside the file, so transparent edges stay smooth. Everything runs on your device: drop one logo or a batch of images, and nothing is uploaded.
Using the ICO as a favicon
Name the file favicon.ico and put it in the root folder of your site, so it opens at yoursite.com/favicon.ico. Browsers look there on their own, so no extra HTML is needed. If your site builder asks for a favicon file, upload the same ICO there.
Getting a sharp icon
Start from a square PNG of at least 256 pixels with a simple shape. Fine details and thin text disappear at 16 pixels, so a bold logo mark works better than a full wordmark. If your image is not square, the converter centers it and leaves transparent space at the sides instead of cropping it.
Questions and answers
Is it safe?
Yes. Icons are built in your browser, and your images are never uploaded.
Which sizes are inside the ICO?
Four: 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels. Browsers use 16 and 32 for tabs and bookmarks, Windows uses 48 and 256 for shortcuts and desktop icons.
What if my image is not square?
It is centered on a square canvas, and the empty sides stay transparent. Nothing is cropped or stretched.
Is the transparent background kept?
Yes. Every size inside the ICO keeps the transparency of your PNG.
How big should my PNG be?
256 by 256 pixels or larger. A smaller image still works, but the 256 px icon will look soft because it has to be enlarged.
Why use ICO instead of a PNG favicon?
A favicon.ico in the root of your site works in every browser, old ones included, without any HTML tag. Many sites ship both: favicon.ico for compatibility and a PNG or SVG icon for modern browsers.
