About WebP and PNG

WebP is the image format most websites now serve, because it keeps pages light. When you save a picture from a browser, it often lands on your disk as a .webp file. Many editors, slide tools and older programs cannot open it, or open it without the transparent background.

This converter turns WebP images into PNG files. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so logos, icons, stickers and screenshots look the same as they did in the WebP, see-through areas included. Each image is converted on your device, so the original files are never sent to a server.

PNG stores every pixel without compression loss, so the result is usually larger than the WebP, sometimes several times larger for photos. If you need a small file for a photo and do not need transparency, WebP to JPG gives a lighter result.

Animated WebP files are converted to a still image of the first frame. Text and metadata stored inside the WebP are not copied over.

Questions and answers

Is it safe?

Yes. Conversion happens in your browser, and your images are never uploaded.

Is the transparent background kept?

Yes. PNG supports transparency, so logos and stickers keep their see-through areas.

Will the image lose quality?

No. PNG is lossless, so the image is not compressed again and looks the same as the WebP. The file is often larger than the original.

What happens to animated WebP?

Only the first frame is saved. PNG holds a single still image.
