About HEIC and PNG
HEIC is the format iPhones use for photos by default. It packs a photo into a small file, but many editors, Windows apps and design tools still cannot open it.
PNG is a lossless format: it compresses the image without throwing any detail away. That makes it a good choice when the photo is a starting point rather than the final result. You can crop, retouch or add text in any editor and save as often as you like without the quality slowly wearing down, which happens each time a JPG is saved again.
The trade-off is size. A PNG of an iPhone photo is often five to ten times larger than the HEIC it came from. If you only want to send the photo or upload it to a website, convert it to JPG instead. The file will be far smaller and look the same.
Drop one photo or a whole batch and download the PNG files one by one or as a ZIP. Each photo is converted in your browser, so the originals never leave your device. The photo is turned the right way up, while the date, location and other data stored in the HEIC are not copied. Keep the original if you need that data.
Questions and answers
Is it safe?
Yes. Conversion happens in your browser, and your photos are never uploaded.
Should I pick PNG or JPG?
Pick PNG if you plan to edit the photo and save it many times without further quality loss. For sharing and uploading, JPG is much smaller and works just as well.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the HEIC?
PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression, while HEIC is built to keep photos small. A PNG of an iPhone photo is often five to ten times larger.
Does it work on iPhone?
Yes, in Safari and Chrome. Large PNG files take more memory, so convert big batches on a computer if your phone slows down.
What happens to Live Photos?
The still photo is converted. The short video of a Live Photo is stored in a separate file and is not included.
